The official Airport of St. Kitts is Robert Llewelyn Bradshaw Airport and is two miles from Basseterre. The airport can be reached by calling 869-465-8970 on the island.

Recently, Robert Bradshaw International Airport was renovated to accommodate a longer landing strip, larger arrival areas, and additional departure gates. If you are flying from Canada or Europe, you can find carriers that offer connecting flights from Antigua, St. Martin, or San Juan. These hopper flights are available through several airlines and offer easy connections from the UK and other European countries. In season, there are direct charter flights from the UK and Germany.

When flying in from the United States or Canada, some of the easiest cities to catch a connecting flight from are Detroit, Boston, and Dallas.

Nevis hosts the Newcastle Airport, which can only be reached in short hopper planes, but several connecting flights link Nevis to Antigua and St. Kitts.

Airport Security

Security measures have been heightened in recent years, especially in the United States. Most airports have adopted new security measures in addition to traditional baggage screening procedures. Also, there may be more security guards and security checkpoints throughout the airport. To help your trip through the airport go smoother, and to board your flight on time, keep these safety issues in mind.

  • Try to arrive at least one hour before your scheduled domestic flight, or two hours prior to your international flight. This will help ensure you make it through security procedures in enough time to board your flight.

  • Be sure to bring a government issued ID such as a driver's license or passport, and if you have an electronic ticket, the print-out of the conformation page. You will have to show your ID at the ticket counter and/or gate.

  • It is recommended that you not lock your baggage so that airport security can check it by hand if necessary.

  • Only ticketed passengers will be allowed through security. Make sure you have your ticket or conformation information in hand.

Carry-on Luggage

Some new regulations concerning carry-on luggage have been implemented in recent years by airports and airlines. For complete information on rules for carry-on luggage and a list of permissible carry-on items, visit the Transportation Security Administration at www.tsa.gov/public/index.jsp or call 866-289-9673. Here is some information regarding carry-on luggage:

  • Each passenger is allowed one carry-on item and one personal item such as a laptop, purse, or briefcase.

  • Sharp objects such as scissors, knives, and razors cannot be brought aboard the plane.

  • Food can be brought aboard as long as it has passed through the X-ray machine. It is recommended that you take food as a part of your carry on, as some items may set off bomb-detection devices.

  • Do not take wrapped gifts with you because they may set off metal detectors, and they will have to be opened. The item could become damaged as a result.
